LOREC - the Low Recatal Cancer Development Programme

Pelican Cancer Foundation is delivering the Low Rectal Cancer Development Programme (LOREC) with the National Clinical Lead, Mr Brendan Moran from Hampshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. LOREC is a pilot programme which aims to improve cancer outcomes and quality of life for patients with low rectal cancers.

The LOREC pilot programme, funded by the National Cancer Action Team, involves 28 colorectal multi-disciplinary cancer teams (MDTs) across England, to develop understanding and skills for treating this complex cancer. There is no intention for this pilot programme to centralise the treatment of rectal cancer.

The LOREC objectives are:

• To enhance patient-centred MDT decision making
• To optimise operative technique
• To diminish post-operative complications and improve quality of life outcomes
• To improve oncological outcomes

The clinical lead for LOREC is Mr Brendan Moran. The programme is being administered through the Pelican Cancer Foundation. The Programme Director is Sarah Crane.
