Charity runner Melanie sets the pace for Pelican
Charity runner Melanie Horton piled on the miles to raise funds for Basingstoke-based Pelican Cancer Foundation.
She took part in the Great Edinburgh Run earlier this year and has raised £550 for the charity which funds clinical research into advancing precision surgery in the treatment of bowel, liver, bladder and prostate cancers.
NHS medical secretary Melanie, aged 52, ran in the popular Scottish event in memory of her best friend Wendy Neill who died from liver cancer at the age of 51.
“The run went really well. I completed the 10 miles in one hour 44 minutes and broke three of my personal records - fastest mile, fastest 5k and fastest 10k,” she said.
She chose Pelican as her charity after learning that it has been at the forefront of the drive to help patients with ‘below the belt’ cancers.
The Basingstoke liver surgical team, which includes Merv Rees, Tim John, Fenella Welsh and Ben Cresswell, are dedicated to improving the quality of life for cancer patients after treatment and surgery.
Pelican chief executive Sarah Crane said: “Congratulations to Melanie on completing the Great Edinburgh Run and huge thanks to her for raising these much-needed funds for Pelican.
“We hope local people will continue to support us by raising money and public awareness while having fun in the community.
“Pelican is holding its first ever Festive Fun Run on Sunday, December 10, 2017, in Basingstoke’s War Memorial Park.
“We are looking for jolly Santas of all ages to take part in either a 5km or 2.5km run – everybody who signs up will receive a free Santa suit complete with long white beard!
“Breeze FM will join us on the day with great music and fun to make sure everybody has a brilliant time and all runners will get a medal!”
Earlybird discount is available for fun runners who sign up before Friday 29 September 2017 – children (age 6-16) cost just £7.50 (normally £10) and adults pay £10 (normally £15).
All participants are asked to raise £50 to go towards the work of Pelican Cancer Foundation.
