Bladder cancer is the seventh most common cancer in the UK, the fourth in males, and it accounts for 3% of all deaths from cancer. In 2011 10,399 new cases of bladder cancer were diagnosed. There are various different types of bladder cancer including transitional cell bladder cancer. Transitional cell bladder cancer is the most common form and affects 90% of bladder cancer patients. Non-muscle invasive (superficial) bladder cancer is a form of early stage transitional cell bladder cancer where the cancer has not yet penetrated the deeper walls of the bladder and is confined to the inner lining, or just below.
The Basingstoke Department of Urology has a special interest in the treatment of superficial bladder cancer and has helped to develop new techniques for treating this condition, including intraoperative administration of chemotherapy into the bladder, microwave hyperthermia. The department is actively involved in National trials in bladder cancer and has a research link with the University of Reading.
