Our prostate cancer team

At Hampshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust:

Mr Richard Hindley

is a Consultant Urological Surgeon at Hampshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust who has introduced HIFU (high intensity focused ultrasound) for the treatment of prostate cancer for men who are unsuitable for surgery. HIFU is being used both as a primary treatment and as a salvage therapy for patients who have local recurrence following EBRT.

Mr Hindley has also introduced the high powered KTP (green-light) laser (the first in the region) which vaporises prostate tissue and is set to replace traditional prostate surgery for benign (non-cancerous) prostate enlargement.

Phillipa Aslet

is a Specialist Prostate Cancer Nurse with extensive experience in the management of patients following radical treatments for prostate cancer and runs her own dedicated follow-up clinics. She works closely with Richard Hindley and is involved with prostate cancer screening and diagnosis.

Research at UCL (University College London):

Professor Mark Emberton

is Reader in Interventional Oncology for Royal Free and University College London School for Medicine, an Honorary Consultant Urologist and Divisional Clinical Director of Cancer Services at the University College Hospitals London. His research interests are chiefly focused on prostatic diseases and non-invasive methods of diagnosis and minimally invasive methods of treatment, including focal therapy for prostate cancer. He is a regular presenter at international scientific meetings. He is also Clinical Director of the Clinical Effectiveness Unit at the Royal College of Surgeons of England.

Trials for which Professor Emberton is Chief Investigator:

(Click on the title to link to the UK Clinical Research Network Study Portfolio trial details)

  • INDEX: for men whose cancer has not spread beyond the prostate and with cancer at low to medium risk of spreading, this trial evaluates how high intensity focused ultrasound (known as HIFU) can be used to treat the prostate cancer. [Trial status is open.]
  • MAPPED: this trial is for men who have been diagnosed with prostate cancer following a biopsy and who are being closely monitored by their doctors (‘active surveillance’), to see if the drug dutasteride can shrink the cancer. [The trial status is open.]
  • COMPARe study (COMparing treatment options for ProstAte cancer): this trial is to look at patient preferences for the different treatment options for localized prostate cancer. [This trial is currently In set-up, pending NHS permission.]
  • PROMIS Prostate MRI Imaging Study (MRC PR11): for men who are at risk of prostate cancer and who have been advised to have a prostate biopsy, PROMIS will look at whether multi-parametric Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MP-MRI) before the biopsy can be used effectively. [Trial status is in set-up, pending NHS permission]

Dr Hashim Uddin Ahmed

is currently a Research Fellow and Specialist Registrar at University College London, with an academic interest in uro-oncology. He is particularly focused on investigating the role of focal therapy using high-intensity focused ultrasound in prostate cancer and in improving the diagnosis of prostate cancer by the use of imaging modalities.
