Ad-Hoc Volunteering
Examples of the volunteering opportunities that are available on an ad-hoc basis are:
- To organise and run an event for us (see our Fundraising Pack for ideas)
- To help with an event – Golf Day, Christmas Gift Fair, Film Night
- To support us in the office, there is always something that needs to be done! e.g data entry on our database, research for future funding, help with administration for our courses or follow-up on courses. Experience of using PC software is a must.
- Offers of expertise to support the work of the Foundation are always greatly appreciated e.g. PR, graphic design, marketing
2-Week Volunteering: Ideal for those interested in the Charity or Health Sector
If you are looking to spend more time with Pelican and have a minimum of two weeks available to volunteer then please read on.
If you are interested in working in the charities sector or are a student envisaging a career in the health sector then we have a number of additional voluntary positions available. Candidates should be either in their A-level year or beyond. These positions could involve:
- Work on our database of cancer clinicians and specialists
- Assisting with the promotion and marketing of the charity
- Learning about the impact of the Gift Aid Scheme
- The opportunity to sit in on surgical courses and to meet with leading cancer specialists
All roles will be based at the Pelican Offices at The Ark Conference Centre next door to Basingstoke Hospital, RG24 9NN

Currently studying at Edinburgh University, Chloe joined us for a few weeks last summer before she entered her penultimate year studying Biomedical Sciences. “A large element of my course revolves around anatomy, and I have chosen to specialise in reproductive biology; time at Pelican is therefore a great opportunity for me to broaden my knowledge, and gain novel ideas for my dissertation. I’ve been working on faculty and sponsor organisation for the courses that Pelican offers.”
Having just finished her second year studying Human Sciences at UCL Saskia joined us for a month during her summer break in 2014. “This degree course has helped me realise how important it is to communicate science effectively to the public and in the future I hope to focus my career in this area. My time at Pelican, where I have been summarising research for the website and conference material, has allowed me to gain good experience whilst helping a worthwhile cause.”
Gareth spent six months with Pelican helping us to maintain our relationship with all the clinicians who participate in different areas of our activity. Gareth has a place at Warwick Medical School so this has been an opportunity to learn more about medicine. When Gareth was holidaying in Lisbon he was invited by Professor Bill Heald to visit The Champalimaud Foundation with Prof Amjad Parvais (Gareth far left next to Professor Heald)
