Carys – Cardiff Half Marathon

October 24, 2017 by pelicanadmin

First-time half marathon runner Carys smashed her fundraising target by 340% when she sprinted to success for Pelican Cancer Foundation.

She was delighted to raise £2,550 for the Basingstoke charity by competing in the Cardiff half marathon after a family member was diagnosed with the rare cancer of the appendix, Pseudomyxoma Peritonei.

Carys and her family were moved by the positivity and kindness of the team of doctors and nurses at Basingstoke Hospital who provided great support during their loved one’s treatment.

“Our family member had a life-changing operation at Basingstoke, one of only two hospitals in the UK that specialises in the illness which is very stubborn to treat with chemotherapy,” she said.

“It was a very emotional time and our family pulled together. During the five weeks he was in hospital I always tried to be positive, but it was hard at times. The day we went to bring him home to recover was a happy day.”

Carys’ relative went on to receive chemotherapy in Cardiff and she was inspired to sign up for the city’s half marathon to raise awareness and funds for Pelican, which is dedicated to improving the quality of life for patients with bowel, liver, bladder and prostate cancers.

“I completed the Cardiff half marathon with a time of two hours 13 minutes – I was rather happy and shocked with that time. How I made it the last mile and a half I don’t know! This was a massive achievement for me.

“I was delighted to raise so much money for Pelican as it is a cause close to my heart – the charity’s clinical trials helped with the quick diagnosis of our family member and for that we will always be thankful.”

Pelican chief executive Sarah Crane said: “Congratulations to Carys for completing the Cardiff half marathon and huge thanks to her for raising these much-needed funds for Pelican.

October 20, 2017 by pelicanadmin

Tony was diagnosed with bowel cancer in July 2016 which had spread to his liver. Now recuperating from three major operations this year and now tumour/cancer free, Tony (Team Dude) decided to take part in our Festive Fun Run in order to raise funds for Pelican. Through friends and family, he raised a spectacular £2,515 including gift aid. Tony set up a page on the Virgin Money Giving website in order to collect sponsorship.

Thank you so much Tony for all your efforts in raising this incredible amount for us! We are incredibly grateful.

Linda & Lea – Rock the Night Away with Scott Elvis

October 19, 2017 by pelicanadmin

This year’s Scott Elvis event, the fifth organised by Linda, was again held at the Great Danes Hotel in Kent, raising funds for Pelican Cancer Foundation and Breast Cancer Care.

Linda’s world turned upside down when she was told that she had Pseudomyxoma Peritonei. She learnt that she would need to be treated in Basingstoke, one of the two centres of excellence in the UK. In 2011, Linda successfully underwent cytoreduction surgery with HIPEC carried out by Mr Brendan Moran and his team. The surgery is incredibly complex and she learnt that Pelican Cancer Foundation’s work towards making precision surgery for this sort of cancer is the best it can be. Pelican is continually researching and analysing best practice and training surgical teams across the country with a view to making sure that patients like Linda receive the best care possible and don’t just survive cancer, but have a life after it as well.

At this year’s event, Scott Elvis gave a great night’s entertainment to 140 guests and the dance floor was full all evening!

Through everyone’s generosity, Linda and family were delighted to have raised £2,341 for Pelican Cancer Foundation, bringing the total raised through this event and other fundraisers to over £14,000.

Next year’s event is already planned – so please mark it in your diary for the 12th October 2018!

Inspirational Fundraising by Intermusica

December 1, 2016 by pelicanadmin

Intermusica Ltd were a real fundraising inspiration in 2016 raising almost £10,000 for Pelican Cancer Foundation!

40 members of Intermusica staff and artists donned their running shoes on the Saturday 19th November 2016 and took part in a 5K run and raised an incredible £8,962.

On Thursday 8 December 2017 they embraced the festive spirit and went carol singing at Islington Green Christmas Market to help raise even more money for us.

Intermusica decided to raise money for Pelican after one of their beloved mezzo-sopranos, Pamela, was diagnosed with cancer. She underwent treatment in 2016 and is progressing well.

We couldn’t be more grateful for their incredible spirit and success!

Thank you Intermusica! Read more about Intermusica here.

Julie – Bristol Half Marathon

September 30, 2016 by pelicanadmin

Thank you very much to Julie who ran the Bristol Half Marathon on the 25th September 2016. Julie decided to raise money for Pelican and take on this challenge because her sister, Lisa, was treated for Pseudomyxoma at Basingstoke Hospital. Lisa underwent a very long operation that involved cytoreductive surgery. She has had an excellent recovery and was able to cheer Julie on, on the day.

Julie completed the course in a very impressive time of 2hrs 22 mins despite getting drenched just 3 miles in. The sun did shine as she crossed the finish line and she was cheered on by her husband, sister and brother in law.  Julie has raised a very impressive £602 to support our work.

Thank you.

Suneel – The Rutland Marathon

September 30, 2015 by pelicanadmin

Suneel took part in The Rutland Marathon on 27th September 2015. Looking back over the 13 years that his family have enjoyed since his father was first diagnosed with cancer of the colon and treated, was the trigger for Suneel to take on this challenge.

Suneel has chosen to fundraise for Pelican because of his father’s experience with colon cancer. The summary is from his father, in his own words.

“In the year 2000 (aged 52) I was diagnosed with cancer of the colon, fortunately very early stages, when I went for a check-up regarding my ‘piles’. I underwent major abdominal surgery and everything turned out okay. I spent the next 13 years working overseas and returned to the UK as a retired person in 2013.
To my surprise, I was reconnected to the same Consultant Surgeon, Mr. Brendan J MORAN, at Basingstoke & North Hampshire Hospital for my ongoing regular check-ups, much needed for a patient like me. I am extremely pleased to say that the service I have had from the Colorectal Unit for the past 2 years has been excellent. So, when Suneel decided to run The Rutland Marathon, he had no hesitation to donate the entire collection to the Pelican Cancer Foundation. I thank you son and hand over back to you.“
The last 15 years have flown by and as you now know, I have finally decided to give something back and say thank you. I was just 14 (my sister 10 and my brother 6) back in the year 2000 and now cannot imagine all those years without the most important man in my life. Whether you know him as Ashok or Ash, I hope you are able to give generously to support the fantastic work done by the team at Pelican.
I have no target time or total, I will do my very best and I hope that you can do the same.
Thank you for reading and for your contribution.
Suneel

Following the marathon, Suneel reported back that although the day was perfect for spectators, it was a little too warm for the runners and made the challenge seem all the greater.

Suneel raised a fantastic £1,196.73, plus gift aid – www.justgiving.com/suneelappan.

A massive thank you from everyone at Pelican.

Jane – Bamburgh 10K

June 26, 2015 by pelicanadmin

Jane took part in the Bamburgh 10k in June 2015. The setting for the event was stunning, but the weather was not perfect for pics as Jane tells us below:

“It was a bit chilly and drizzly at Bamburgh Castle this morning (the weather had cleared a bit by the time this pic was taken!) but – inspired by your generosity and fuelled by stepping up the training in recent weeks – I did the 10k in approx 51.33 (that’s what my watch told me – still awaiting official stats). It’s not a Personal Best but I’m very happy with the time as the course had a few inclines! I kept a good pace and managed to step it up towards the end.”

Thank you Jane.
