Linda & Lea – Rock the Night Away with Scott Elvis

October 19, 2017 by pelicanadmin

This year’s Scott Elvis event, the fifth organised by Linda, was again held at the Great Danes Hotel in Kent, raising funds for Pelican Cancer Foundation and Breast Cancer Care.

Linda’s world turned upside down when she was told that she had Pseudomyxoma Peritonei. She learnt that she would need to be treated in Basingstoke, one of the two centres of excellence in the UK. In 2011, Linda successfully underwent cytoreduction surgery with HIPEC carried out by Mr Brendan Moran and his team. The surgery is incredibly complex and she learnt that Pelican Cancer Foundation’s work towards making precision surgery for this sort of cancer is the best it can be. Pelican is continually researching and analysing best practice and training surgical teams across the country with a view to making sure that patients like Linda receive the best care possible and don’t just survive cancer, but have a life after it as well.

At this year’s event, Scott Elvis gave a great night’s entertainment to 140 guests and the dance floor was full all evening!

Through everyone’s generosity, Linda and family were delighted to have raised £2,341 for Pelican Cancer Foundation, bringing the total raised through this event and other fundraisers to over £14,000.

Next year’s event is already planned – so please mark it in your diary for the 12th October 2018!

Bowel Cancer Research

October 16, 2017 by pelicanadmin

Bowel cancer research

D-researcher_labelling_tube

Pelican supports research that informs and improves bowel cancer treatment today. The charity’s research studies to date have underlined that a multi-disciplinary approach to treatment is vital to achieving the best possible outcome for bowel cancer patients.

The Total Mesorectal Excision (TME) precise surgical technique that was pioneered by Professor Bill Heald, founder of the Pelican Cancer Foundation. TME saves more lives than any other treatment for bowel cancer. It halves the chance of the cancer returning and reduces negative side effects such as damage to urinary and sexual function. TME has already made a life-saving, life-enhancing difference to thousands of patients all over the world.

Following this direction Pelican has continued to aid ground-breaking research into bowel cancer. Their first major research programme, MERCURYinvestigated the role of MRI in detecting and clearly staging disease, and in planning precision surgery. The study found that MRI could identify the features of a lower bowel (rectal) tumour pre-operatively, allowing for individualised optimal treatment, to be planned by the multi-disciplinary team, including pre-operative therapies, such as radio- or chemotherapy which can shrink the tumours.

MRI allows early tumours to be identified, for which surgery alone is best and pre-operative therapy is not necessary. By informing clinical decision-making, MRI is now providing an opportunity to downstage even poor prognosis rectal tumours and improve patient outcomes.

Building on the wealth of data from the MERCURY project, one of Pelican’s principle research projects at the moment, MERCURY II (Low Rectal Cancer Study), is investigating the ability of MRI-planned surgery and selective pre-operative therapy to reduce the rates of local tumour recurrence and improve overall survival for patients. This is the work of Nick Battersby, based at the Pelican Centre under the project leadership of Mr Brendan Moran and Professor Gina Brown.

Another significant area of research that Pelican is involved in is the Deferral of Surgery Study at the Royal Marsden Hospital. This research looks at the tumour response in low rectal cancers to pre-operative chemoradiation and whether, if it is good, surgery can be safely delayed or avoided to improve patient quality of life. It aims to establish the time needed for maximum down-staging of the tumour and therefore the optimum timing for surgery. In a small number of cases surgery can be avoided altogether but the challenge is discovering which tumours are most likely to respond.

New Year’s Day Lyme Bay Plunge 2016

July 19, 2017 by pelicanadmin

Jackie and Anna braved the wild sea on new year’s day to take the Lyme Bay Plunge in honour of a dear friend recently diagnosed with bladder cancer and raised a wonderful £230 for Pelican. They braved the sea dressed as The Cat in The Hat and Thing 1. Jackie said afterwards: “We actually felt like frauds, as, despite the sea being very rough, it was surprisingly warm. But we were determined to do it to support our dear friend. We hope that Pelican can use the money that we raised towards its great work.”

What a cool challenge to take on to help improve survival and quality of life for cancer patients!

A huge thank you to everyone who attended the Pelican Cancer Foundation Annual Golf Day 2016. For all your good humour, bad jokes and wonderful friendship.

In spite of the weather in May, the day was a huge success – nothing dampens the great British spirit! We raised nearly £5,000 which is absolutely fantastic, and we were all really inspired by the generosity of everyone. It was lovely to meet all the teams, and we are really excited to start planning the 2017 Golf Day.

Pelican Charity Race Evening 2016

July 19, 2017 by pelicanadmin

Thursday 30th June 2016, Newbury Racecourse

A sincere thank you to everyone who
supported the amazing Pelican Charity Race
Evening 2016 in memory of John Hills and
Christian Marner.

An exclusive race evening was held to celebrate
the lives of Christian Marner and the popular
Lambourn trainer John Hills who were two very
special men, passionate about racing and having ‘fun’. Sadly, they died from cancer far too early in life and are hugely missed. Funds were raised in support of Pelican Cancer Foundation and Pancreatic Cancer UK to help fight cancers below the belt through medical research, education, detection and pioneering precision surgery.

The Pelican team would like to thank everyone who supported this fabulous event, especially the wonderful Fiona Marner and her Event Committee.

Mr Venkat, the Consultant Surgeon who used the equipment first, said: “The new camera is great; the improved visibility is amazing and is enabling us to perform even more precise surgery. We have been able to do more complex cases using the new camera that would have required open surgery before. It has been particularly useful for our trainee surgeons who can now more easily perform keyhole surgery because of the depth of vision it provides.”

Thank you to everyone who donated towards our 3D camera appeal, your generosity is improving treatment for bowel cancer patients at Basingstoke Hospital.

Niche Finance Group get their Bake Off On

July 19, 2017 by pelicanadmin

The management team at Niche Finance Group decided early this year that as a group, they wanted to give something back so we put together a charity committee to organise charity support and fundraising. As a group they decided to raise money for three different organisations; the Pelican Cancer Foundation, Harbour Cancer Support Centre and Shelter.

On the 26th August they held their very first “Great Niche Bake Off” at their offices, based in Alton and Whitley and selected their own Paul Hollywood’s and Mary Berry’s very carefully as you’d expect. The winners were Stuart Selkirk who baked a delicious Pina Colada cake and Bradley George who whipped up a beautiful batch of salted caramel brownies. The runners up where Lisa Merriman with her lemon drizzle cake and Connie Waldron with her lemon tart. They also had to give recognition to Hayley Chappell for her out of this world brownie based cheesecake. A massive well done to their winners but, if you think about it… everyone’s a winner when there’s cake all over the office.

Up next on their agenda is the Great South Run in Southsea on the 23rdOctober. So far, they’ve put together a team of 13 crazy people who are looking to run the 10 miles to raise money for their chosen charities and we can’t wait to see them cross the line! This will be shortly followed by some Halloween themed activities which they’re all looking forward to.

They can’t wait to see how much they can raise for their very worthy causes!

Pelican Cancer Foundation launches national programme to fight bowel cancer

July 19, 2017 by pelicanadmin

This national programme will help specialists identify bowel cancer earlier, improve precision treatment and help patients live better for longer, wherever they live. As well as potentially improving outcomes for over 6,200 patients, it will also support local cancer services and could help save the NHS up to £34 million in the long term. (I)

Bowel cancer is the second most common cause of cancer death in the UK (II). The earlier bowel cancer is diagnosed and treated, the better the outcome for patients. Increased public awareness and improved screening have resulted in more patients being diagnosed at an earlier stage of their disease, but there is variability across the UK in the diagnosis and management of early stage cancer, with under- and over-treatment a significant global issue.

As part of the SPECC programme, six core members of all 164 Colorectal Cancer Multi-Disciplinary Teams (MDTs) in England and Wales will be invited to attend a one day workshop on the complex topic of treatment for small (T1) tumours and significant polyps. Hosted across England and Wales over 2015-2017, these workshops will bring together surgeons, radiologists, gastroenterologists, pathologists and clinical nurse specialists to look at the evidence, discuss methods for early diagnosis and treatment and develop informed decision-making for the whole bowel cancer team. Teams will be encouraged to develop their local treatment strategies as well as regional partnerships to help provide consistent treatment options across England and Wales.

The clinical lead for SPECC is Mr Brendan Moran (Surgeon at Basingstoke) with Sarah Crane at the Pelican Cancer Foundation. The eminent steering group includes Professors Wendy Atkin (Epidemiologist at Imperial), Brian Saunders (Gastroenterologist at St Marks), Gina Brown (Radiologist at Royal Marsden), Phil Quirke (Pathologist at Leeds) and Bob Steele (Surgeon at Dundee). Other leaders in the field, from hospitals around England and Wales, will help deliver the programme.

Pelican Cancer Foundation has an exceptional reputation for developing high-impact national and international meetings to improve patient care for cancer patients. Pelican developed and ran LOREC – a previous national programme to improve outcomes in patients with low rectal cancer through enhancing patient-centred decision-making for MDTs. This was attended by 1,200 cancer specialists. Its concepts and strategies influenced 90% of all English colorectal MDTs and had a global impact in the field. (III)

Commenting on the SPECC programme, Sarah Crane, CEO of Pelican Cancer Foundation, said “Our work is all about making a real difference for today’s cancer patients, both in terms of survival and quality of life. Successful roll-out of this new programme will see more consistent treatment options for bowel cancer patients wherever they live. We are very excited to be launching this vital programme and can’t wait to see the impact it will have on the daily practice of cancer specialists nation-wide. We want to thank everyone who has worked so tirelessly with us to make this programme happen.”

SPECC is endorsed by The Association of Coloproctology of Great Britain and Ireland, Beating Bowel Cancer, Bowel Cancer UK, Hampshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, The Royal College of Pathologists and kindly supported by industry sponsors, including (from September 2015 to June 2016) Gold Sponsors Exact Sciences, manufacturer of the stool DNA test Cologuard.
